There’s one moment before every event that I absolutely love: the moment after the briefing when it becomes clear—now we need a key visual. A graphic or motif that serves as a unifying theme throughout the entire event and creates a strong sense of recognition. Even before the first invitation is sent out or the first stage set is in place, this is what determines whether the event’s design will stick in the guests’ minds.

“Do you feel that tingle?” – How a key visual is created
When my colleague Kathrin and I come out of the briefing, ideas are often already bubbling up on our way to the design studio. Through our collaboration and mutual inspiration, a colorful explosion of ideas takes shape—it can even give you goosebumps. As soon as we feel that “tingle,” we put various proposals for the client down on digital paper. Then we discuss them further and tailor the key visual specifically to the client’s wishes.
Why a good key visual is so important
A key visual is more than just a pretty picture for an event. It’s a promise an event makes to its guests before a single word has even been spoken. The color scheme, design language, imagery, and typography all come together to tell a story:
- A key visual for an incentive trip to Namibia must spark unbridled anticipation.
- A key visual for a conference should convey the core message clearly and simply.
In any case, it must convey the brand, evoke emotions and, above all, stand the test of time. It must work digitally, in portrait and landscape orientation, huge on posters and stage banners, but also tiny on a name tag. It appears on social media, on giveaways, directional signs, menus, and admission wristbands, everywhere. Just how important a key visual is for successful event design becomes particularly clear when you imagine it being absent.
That’s why we take our time during the development process and, if necessary, go the extra 42 miles. The key visual is the face of the event, its central theme - it greatly enhances an event and stays in people’s memories long after the last guests have gone home. And that’s exactly why I look forward to it all over again every time I start to feel that tingle of excitement…
Case Study: The key visual for ExtraSchicht
Major events don’t just cast a shadow, they also need images that linger, messages that resonate, and a story that inspires. The interplay of space, light, and movement forms the core of our key visual for ExtraSchicht.
The imagery of industrial architecture captures the powerful history of the Ruhr region: raw, authentic, full of character - a visual nod to the historic industrial sites that form the heart of ExtraSchicht. The colorful, abstract interplay of light has long since become a trademark. It not only represents the visual identity of ExtraSchicht but also serves as a luminous metaphor for the diversity of the artists and their creative contributions.
And then there are the people: shadows in the windows, fleeting silhouettes that hint at what really matters, the visitors. They bring the event to life, turn the venues into spaces for experiences, and transform the Ruhr region into a vibrant festival of the senses for one night.
The result? You can see it on every media platform imaginable.
Frequently asked questions
Your most common questions on this topic – answered from our day-to-day experience.
A key visual is the central graphic motif of an event—a visual language that combines color, form, and message and is consistently applied across all communication channels, from the invitation to the stage design. It creates brand recognition and ensures that an event remains identifiable even years later.
That depends on the scope and complexity of the event. After the briefing, several drafts are typically created, which are then refined in collaboration with the client—an iterative process for which time should be deliberately set aside rather than rushed.
Costs vary depending on the amount of work involved, the number of designs, the complexity of the images, and the intended formats (print, digital, large formats). The best way to estimate these costs is through a personal consultation based on your specific requirements.
Whether it’s a conference, a company anniversary, an incentive trip, or a cultural event like ExtraSchicht—every type of event benefits from a cohesive key visual, albeit with different focuses: sometimes the clear message takes center stage, and other times it’s the emotional anticipation.
A good key visual has to work everywhere: portrait and landscape, huge on posters and stage banners, but also tiny on name tags—as well as on social media, giveaways, directional signs, and admission wristbands.
